Stamp #1

The first stamp in the series is the John Cabot's "Matthew" Stamp. Printed in 1949, it was issued in Canada and identified in the Scott Catalog as Canada Stamp #282.

It depicts John Cabot's ship the "Matthew", which left Bristol in search of Asia, but discovered Newfoundland instead. The exact place of landing is unknown. Land is visible in the left portion of the stamp.

The stamp represents "The Black Rock", which departed England and eventually made it's way to the Island. The ominous-looking skies and mono-chrome color scheme fittingly represent the stormy evening in which The Black Rock crashed on the Island.

Face value: 4¢.
