Stamp #1

The first stamp in the series is the John Cabot's "Matthew" Stamp. Printed in 1949, it was issued in Canada and identified in the Scott Catalog as Canada Stamp #282.

It depicts John Cabot's ship the "Matthew", which left Bristol in search of Asia, but discovered Newfoundland instead. The exact place of landing is unknown. Land is visible in the left portion of the stamp.

The stamp represents "The Black Rock", which departed England and eventually made it's way to the Island. The ominous-looking skies and mono-chrome color scheme fittingly represent the stormy evening in which The Black Rock crashed on the Island.

Face value: 4¢.

COLLECTION AND BACKSTORY

Click for enlarged scan. A little back story on the piece.

The scan is the finished "LOST Stamp Collection". The artist is Mike Roselli, twitter account @mikeroselli. An avid LOST fan, he thought that postage stamps who's printed values were "the numbers" would be a phenomenal collection. Here's a bit about the difficulty of the project, how each stamp in the collection was chosen, and what it represents in LOST: mikeroselli.net/lost

It seemed like the large Twitter community of LOST fans was ripe for helping to spread the news about a donated piece, and the community did not disappoint!

One of the key pieces of this set is the 1971 Wildlife Conservation Issue Stamp. It seemed appropriately printed in the 1970's, as well as being produced by the NWF, the benefactor of this auction.

The piece will be up for auction on Monday, October 4th. A link will be posted here when the auction is up and running

WINNER

At 1:03PM EST today, twitter account @JoshuaWabby guessed "Lost stamps" and won the game. The piece is a collection/collage of #LOST postage stamps whose postages are "the numbers". Twitter account @0bFuSc8 came in at a close second.

Will unveil the piece this evening, and fans can bid on 1 of 4 collections. @JoshuaWabby will get one, and two will remain with the artist. Thanks all for participating and sharing, and don't forget to continue to RT about the auction that will benefit the National Wildlife Federation! Details will be posted here as they are available. Namaste!
